If I really wanted to make a difference this Christmas season, I would...

* VALUE MY FAMILY - The high school students in preparing the program for "Tribute to Parents" took time, lots and lots of time to practice their special numbers, make their videos, write their essays, etc. They stayed late in school, come on Saturdays, save up their allowances so that they can buy something special for their parents – very touching indeed. They did these because they value their parents.

For many, Christmas is the most wonderful and busiest time of the year. Shopping sprees from mall to mall, parties here, reunions there. It is possible that there were family reunions too during the first Christmas, because by the decree of Caesar Augustus, everyone was ordered to return to their own towns for the census.

Christmas is a good time for families to gather together to celebrate the coming of the Savior. It is also the best time to renew relationships; and as a family, honor the One whom the Father had sent to bring "peace on earth and goodwill to men." As I write this, I remind myself that this Christmas I must take time to focus on those at home.

If I would really want to make a difference, I would...

CELEBRATE DIVERSITY
"It's a small world... after all..." goes the familiar song in one of the shows at Disneyland. This song was sung repeatedly from the time you enter the tunnel that take you on a journey that says to me, "Wow! There is beauty in diversity." Inside the tunnel, you witness a portrayal of different people groups in their national costumes, singing the same song in their own language... awesomely beautiful! We are so culturally diverse yet we belong to one race – the human race. When we learn not only to tolerate difference but actually embrace it, then we begin to experience the richness of cultural differences. God has created a universe that celebrates diversity. The science of genetics confirms this truth – no two individuals possess the same genes completely. Hence, whether in the family or inside the classroom, parents and teachers must remember that no two children/students are the same. Each one is unique – a reason to celebrate!

BE THE FIRST TO SAY "I'M SORRY."
It takes courage to be the first to apologize in any situation. And if we do apologize, we do it in a quick, less than heartfelt "sorry," and be done with it. Neither Adam nor Eve ever said "sorry" when confronted by God. Every human being thereafter has difficulty saying one of the most important phrases, "I'm sorry." PRIDE hinders us from apologizing, especially if the other person is even more at fault than we. But when we do so, we bring great healing to ourselves. We turn the tide of resentment and alienation. If you find it difficult to say "I'm sorry," you have an opportunity to make a difference – stand up and be the better person. Be the first to say "I'm sorry."


GOD or GOLD?
On one occasion, the President of Argentina was having lunch with Roger Babson, a famous statistician. "Mr. Babson," the president said, "I have been wondering why it is that South America, with all its natural resources – mines of iron, copper, coal and silver, rivers and great waterfalls is so far behind North America? Babson replied, "South America was founded by the Spanish who came in search of GOLD. North America was founded by the Pilgrims who went there in search of GOD."

If we live a life seeking GOLD – the BLESSINGS of God, but NOT GOD himself – we end up losing both.

PS. How so that today North America is in a state of economic disaster? Have they forgotten the God that the Pilgrims sought centuries ago?

"Seek first the kingdom of God... all these things shall be added unto you." (Matthew 6:33)

If I really wanted to make a difference, I would...

* Become like little children – To some, it came as a surprise when the grand winner in the Junior Category of the recently concluded PCGS GOT TALENT belonged to the group of grades 1 & 2 pupils (ages 6 to 8). When they "performed" during the Finals Night, they were so adult-like in the precision of their moves; yet, they were so child-like in their expressions such that one can "see through" their souls. They were so real, so sincere, and so transparent; it was not an act or a performance. It was what they are! I think this was what captured so many a hearts that night, mine included.

* Practice humility – The world admires aggressiveness, power and supremacy. But if we want to make a difference, we would heed the Bible's advice – practice humility. God opposes the proud but exalts the humble (Proverbs 3:34). John the Baptist, the precursor of Jesus, is a classic example of this extraordinary trait. When Jesus began His ministry, John immediately gave way to Jesus. In John's words: "He must increase, I must decrease" (John 3:30).

If I would really want to make a difference, I would...

* TELL THE TRUTH.
"Honesty is the best policy" was a motto I always see written on people's autographs, including mine. But today, this simple truth does seem clouded... we compromise this virtue with half-truths, insinuation, exaggeration and excuses. Nowadays, it is a hard thing to live with integrity. Somewhere around the city I came across the following: "Be honest even if others are not; even if others will not; and even if others cannot." Interestingly, the book of Revelation specifically mentions that there are no LIARS in heaven (Revelation 21: 8). Remember that Satan is the father of lies. To guard oneself from the attacks of Satan, we must put on the Belt of Truth. Every good soldier knows the importance of belting the robe for easy movement during combat. Honesty is a virtue to be developed while young. So start now with your toddlers... for adults, it is not too late to resolve to tell the truth.

* REMEMBER TO SAY THANK YOU.
I've seen one of those stickers that say – "If you can read this, thank a teacher," so have you? How easily we have forgotten that sometime not too long ago, a teacher guided your hand to write; sat down beside you to show you how to produce the sound correctly; walked you down the hall because you were afraid to go alone; helped you washed your dirty hands after doing art, etc. The list goes on and on... I asked my ministry class who are high school students who their favorite teacher is... They wrote names of teachers who are in preschool, elementary and high school. It was heart-warming to know that they have not forgotten their teachers in the years past. Henry Adams wrote, "a teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops."

* VISIT A NURSING HOME.
For many years now, a visit to the Hospicio de San Jose in Barili is always included in the itinerary of the educational trips that our high school students take. This facility is home to elderly individuals who are there by choice or otherwise. Almost always our students leave the place teary- eyed or in tears. A visit to this place evokes indescribable feelings of pity and sadness. But every visit brings joy and cheers to the residents in the home. If you know someone who is in this kind of home or who is elderly and alone – go and visit; it will make a difference in your life and the life of the elderly.

Our High School Male Badminton Team composed of senior class students Edbert Glenn Dy and Charles Joshua Chiu with Kent Ivan Evangelista, playing for singles and doubles respectively, finished as the CHAMPIONS in the Inter-school Unit Athletic Meet held last Sept. 2-3.

Playing doubles in the Female category, Hannah Marguerite Ching and Michi Allanah Sy, also finished as the CHAMPIONS at the same Athletic Meet. Playing for singles, Sophomores Christine Mae Lim & Jacqueline Mae Tan finished as 2nd runner-up.

Our Basketball Team got the 1st runner-up place at the same athletic meet.

During the 3rd BTC cup inter-school 3 on 3 basketball tournament, our team was FIRST Runner-up for the categories: 16 and 14 years under. Aldred Emmanuel Du (3rd year student) was named MVP of the season.

If we really wanted to make a difference, we would do the following suggestions:

* BE CAREFUL NOT TO ASSIGN BLAME -Few years back, our school's Student Government (SSG) had this slogan printed on their shirts -"Give the praise, Take the blame." I thought it was a very cool slogan. Blaming another person started in the Garden of Eden and it has been this way with us ever since. It takes a lot of courage and humility to own up our mistakes and say "I am wrong." But doing so produces respect and builds character.

* REFUSE TO LET THE LITTLE THINGS GET TO ME - Little irritations, annoyances, minor interruptions, ... life is full of these - the car won't run, you are stuck in traffic, the laundry woman did not come, ... the list goes on and on. How do we handle these little things? Before reacting in anger and frustration, take a deep breath and ask - will this matter in a day? In an hour? 30 or 15 minutes? If the answer is NO, then shake it off, toss it away and let it go. Why fuss over these little things and lose your sanity? "Don’t sweat the small stuff," the author suggests. Instead, learn to laugh away the blues.

Jonathan Conrad G. Yu (Grade 4 pupil) was chosen to join the RP team sent to compete in the 7th International Mathematics Contest held in Singapore last week. More than 100 contestants from 10 countries were competing in the same level as Jonathan. Jonathan was awarded a BRONZE prize. To God be all the glory!

If you really wanted to make a difference, what would you do?
Allow me to continue sharing from the book of the same title and my own reflections -

*AVOID NEGATIVE THINKING. Many people are sons and daughters of Mr. & Mrs. Cant - I CAN'T sing;
I CAN'T speak; I CAN'T act; I CAN'T...do anything. Some are grandchildren of Mr. & Mrs. Not -
it is NOT possible; it is NOT doable; it is NOT going to work... We should rather have a mindset
that says - this is possible; we will make this work. Yes, we can! Negativism is unhealthy. It is
sickening and contagious. It does not glorify God because it negates all that God is.

*LIVE IN THE MOMENT. We dream and day dream... we work and save up for tomorrow. We
purchase life insurance plan, educational plan, memorial plan, etc. There is nothing wrong about
making plans, dreaming dreams, saving up for the future... what makes it wrong is when we become
obsessed with the future and disregard the here and now opportunity to share experiences, build and
nurture relationships. Don't forget that life consists of moments so don't waste them.

*TAKE MORE PICTURES. My father is a lover and collector of many things - music, fishes, books,
pictures... he designed an album for each of his six children. When we turned 90 last month, we
celebrated it showing pictures he took during our "growing up" years. The pictures brought back
childhood memories and stories; old and recent pictures kept us laughing; bonding the family again
and again and again. A picture is worth a thousand words.

So if you would really want to make a difference for Jesus... Avoid negative thinking (speak life)...
live in the moment (love life)... take more pictures (share life)!

Got Any Old Game Boards
Two weeks ago, the Junior Student Government launched "Minds on Wheels" -
a program scheduled after lunch period. The project is to encourage elementary pupils
to be engaged in a match of chess, scrabble, UNO and other mind games after lunch.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Administration, Faculty & Staff, I welcome you and
your child/ward to Philippine Christian Gospel School. We are commitedd to deliver quality
Christian education with the Word of God as our central teaching. This school year, join me and
my team as we set our hearts and minds in "Making a Difference for Jesus." Recently, a friend gave
me a small book entitled, "If I really wanted to make a difference, I would..." This 159 page book,
spelled out 78 simple suggestions that the reader can do to make a solid contribution for good.
Allow me to share the first four and my own reflections -

*TALK LESS AND LISTEN MORE. I once saw a poster that caught my attention. It reads,
"Listen and Silent are spelled with the same letters." Interesting, isn't it? James in 1:19 expressed it
in this manner. "My beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak."

*GET ENOUGH REST. We live in an age characterized by heightened noise and action.
More and more people live an extremely active life. After creating the world in six days, God
rested. God understood the value of rest. Thus, He commanded his people to observe teh Sabbath -
a day to rest, reflect, rejuvenate and recreate.

*PUT PEOPLE FIRST. God created us to be social and relational beings. When Jesus
called his disciples, He called them to be with him. At the end of the day, what matters is not how
much money you have made but how many lives yo have touched.

*REFUSE TO HOLD GRUDGES. Nursing a grudge leads to bitterness; it eats you up.
It robs you of joy, sleep, and health. God calls us to a ministry of reconciliation and restoration.
Hanging on the cross, Jesus prayed for his crucifiers, "Father, forgive them for they know not what
they do." Learn to forgive the offender and forget the offense."

Looking back to the year that we just concluded, we have made some breakthroughs in our effort to foster closer ties with the parents. This is most evident in our high school department. We have strengthened the bond between family and school. Who can forget the "Parents Appreciation Night" last October? Or, the just concluded Seniors Retreat with the amazing and dazzling performance of the parents. We were all stunned in surprise. These events truly blessed us and drew us closer to our parents and vice-versa.

Our Student Government also made some breakthroughs in their Outreach projects. We visited two barangays where two of our high school students are serving as SK. During their visit to barangay Tinago last March 18, they were privileged to have the city major - the Honorable Michael Rama, attend their gathering while our coaches were conducting a Basketball clinic among the youth in that barangay. It was a great opportunity to shine for Jesus.


PCGS Granted FIVE-Year Re-accredited Status
Recommended by the Association of Christian Schools, Colleges & Universities, Accrediting Agency, Inc., the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP) approved the granting of a five (5) year re-accredited status to all of our three programs: namely, Preschool, Elementary and High School.

In the "Wizard of Oz" young Dorothy was transported to a land away from home where she met many lovely and ugly creatures. But she came to befriend three characters - a SCARECROW who wanted a HEAD; a TIN MAN who wanted a HEART; a LION who wanted COURAGE. These characters thought their significance lies in the things that they are seeking. It took the Wizard of Oz to help them realize that each of them already possess the things that they long for.

Like the scarecrow, tin man and the lion, many people seek their significance in possessions, position, peoples, titles, etc. Actually, the Bible tells us that we are already significant because of who we are - created in God's image. We were fearfully and wonderfully created for God's highest pleasure. And if we are God's children by virtue of believing in Christ and accepting Him as our personal Lord and Savior, then that makes us even more significant.

The young Dorothy having been "forcibly" transported to a strange land also longed for home. Christians too, we long for the eternal home promised to us by our Father in heaven.

We celebrated the school's 63rd Founder's day last week with the theme, "Shine for Jesus." We celebrated it with much fun, food and a festival of dances and praises cheering our God; at the same time, we remind ourselves to shine for Jesus at work, at play, in school, at home or in society.

It is no accident that PCGS exists today. It started with a vision among a few men and women of the Cebu Gospel Church. They had a burning desire to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with the community in Cebu back in the 40's. About the kingdom, Jesus said: "you're here to be light. God is not a secret to be kept. I made you to be light-bearers; you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand. Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand-SHINE!" (Matthew 5:16-18, paraphrased from the Message).

God is challenging all members of the PCGS Family to be light-bearers - to shine in this world where darkness characterized by self-seeking pleasures, immorality, injustice, corruption, ungodly desires abound. By God's grace and our commitment, PCGS will shine brightly for His glory.


The Wizard of Oz
Your class representatives met last February 3 and decided to support wholeheartedly the forthcoming stage production of the "Wizard of Oz." The support shall come in the form of mandatory contribution of P150 by all students including participants from Grades 1 through High 4. The parents also agreed that attendance is a MUST of all students from Grades 1 through High 4. The play is scheduled to be staged in school on March 5. Goodbye 2010, welcome 2011! What is it about a new year that excites us such that we stay awake to greet it with glee, and revelry at the stroke of 12 midnight? A new year evokes in us a sense of hope and joy like greeting a newborn baby. It is an ecstatic feeling, thrilled at the thought that however bad the year that was, the new year is a fresh start; it gives us hope that the New Year will be better than the last.

"O taste and see that the Lord is good," (Psalm 34:8). The psalmist invites us to savor the goodness of God. Just like food, we can only truly savor its flavour (how yummy it is) when we eat it. And in eating the food, we cannot hurry but taking bite-sized portion, chewing it, slowly analyzing and appreciating the taste before finally swallowing it.

Similarly, we need to take time to nurture our relationship with God. We cannot hurry the process. But as we draw close to Him in prayer and Bible reading, we will begin to know Him and appreciate God for who He is - His beauty, infinite wisdom, His amazing love, his goodness, awesome power, holiness, etc. Then, like the food we tasted - we will declare, "Yes, God is good, so good!" This 2011 let us purposed in our hearts to sit at Jesus' feet regularly and to savor His ALL.

Anticipating heavy traffic around the school's area due to the city-wide celebration, classes in the afternoon of January 14, Friday, shall be cancelled. Dismissal for preschool remains the same. Elementary pupils will be dismissed at 11:30; high school students will be dismissed at 12:00 noon. Likewise, Basic Accounting class this Saturday (January 15) is also cancelled. January 17 Monday is a regular school day unless otherwise declared by the city government or the department of education. Please read the local papers for proper guidance regarding suspension of classes for PRIVATE SCHOOLS.

February 21: Room to Room Campaign
February 22: Grand Rally
February 23: Election
