Blessed New Year to everyone! It is the year 2014. We are writing a new book with 12 chapters. Chapter 1 opens with a mystery, a challenge and a promise. What is 2014 going to be like? Will I get a job or still go jobless? Will I make more money or go bankrupt? Will there be birth or death or illness? Will it be a peaceful or tumultuous year? Is there going to be an earthquake? Typhoon? Storm surge? Tsunami? Volcanic eruption? Plagues? Pandora's Box is released...what is poured out? There have been many predictions of more calamities; but as believers of Jesus Christ, we know that the whole earth has already been cursed because of sin. Jesus confirmed this long ago when he said "in this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world" (John 16:33, NIV).
The Lord Jesus challenged us to take heart, also translated "be of good cheer." How can one remain cheerful amidst trouble? The key is "in Jesus!" Yes, Jesus said, "I have told you these things [referring to the difficult times after Jesus leaves the earth for heaven], so that in me you may have peace. It is both a challenge and a promise to trust Him and claim His peace in the midst of trouble. Our Lord has already overcome the world, which means that Jesus has already defeated the world. The world is under His bidding and control; no world event is without His knowledge and sovereign rule. Therefore for all God's children, the only logical response is to invite Him to journey with us every day of 2014 and we will enjoy His abiding presence and peace amidst troubles.
